The Old Havana

About 10 years ago, I wrote a prose that after all this time came back to me by itself. I was dreaming a few days ago, like every night, and it appeared in the middle of my dream without a reason, like a TV commercial, and reminded me of that text that I titled “The scent of Havana”

After the dream, the idea of writing a song about the Havana subject, which is now a pre-teen at its 10 years of age, was planted in my head. I had to put some Caribbean music on those unstructured ideas and make them dance.

I did not dislike the task at all, on the contrary, the only problem was to find a time to make those sensations, now 10 years old, somehow return to my senses. As if it were so easy to put the sensations in the freezer to use them at some point in the future! No, I had to close my eyes, immerse myself in the heat of the memories for about a couple of hours and bring them back. This is not particularly easy when you’re at work.

I had a motif to start with, I mean a musical theme, as the subject of the song, has been already dictated from beyond, or from a little more here, to not go that far. I chose the phrase “Your scent Habana” would be my motif. I expected it would sing its tune. Every sentence in a given language have its own melody, rhythm and pace. This was no exception, the phrase sung itself, and I loved it. It goes like this: ♫ Your scent Havana – I am sure you can hear it.

With the motif and the piano on the fingers, I began to develop what would be the phrases that will accompany the main theme, that at this point lasts only 2 seconds. It should not be so difficult, I only had to add about 90 seconds to the left and 90 seconds to the right of the motif and would have a 182 seconds song, in other words, 3:02 minutes. 3 minutes is the industry standard to make the song “radio friendly” and although it was not my intention to be as friendly to the radio, was a good starting point.

I spent some time working on the sentences that would give meaning and unity to a broader idea, It will be something like “♫ Your scent Havana, ta ta ta… Ta ta ta ta, tata tata tatatata tata Tán” I was sure I could find the rest of the words. I decided to further develop the other sections and not to worry about those tata tatas. So I wrote a rhythm section with an twist of of Danzón or Cha Cha for the verses. Then I wrote a new musical idea, different from the original to function as an introduction and intermezzo.

My rebel subconscious wanted to throw a couple of dissonances here and there, but my conscious said, that would break with the traditional feel of the song. After several hours of negotiations, they agreed to put the dissonances only at the beginning and end. My subconscious was not very happy, but agreed to not create a bigger problem with his counterpart that after all is the one that brings the daily bread for the family.

After several hours of internal discussion I was able finish the remaining 180 seconds. I had to practice all the pieces together, make the glue between each part not obvious, lay the repetitions in the right places and not let their individual egos to kidnap the spirit of the song. The music was finished, I made a rustic recording just to not to forget its primo genus stage. Now I just have to write the other 180 seconds of lyrics to accompany the two seconds of “Your scent, Havana”

Habana Vieja

Hace aproximadamente 10 años escribí una prosa, que después de todo este tiempo vino a mí como una forma de reivindicación histórica de si misma. Yo soñaba hace unos días, como todas las noches, cuando se apareció en el sueño sin ser ni siquiera parte del mismo, así como esas escenas de “Interrumpimos este programa….” y me recordó de ese texto que se llamaba “El olor de la Habana”

Después de ese sueño, la idea de escribir una canción con esas letras, que ahora son pre-adolescentes a sus 10 años de edad, se plantó en mi cabeza y no me dejó tranquilo. Tenía que ponerle música caribeña a tan inestructuradas ideas y hacerlas bailar.

El trabajo no me desagradaba en lo más mínimo, al contrario, el único problema era encontrar el momento para que esas sensaciones vividas hace más de 10 años, de alguna manera regresaran a mis sentidos. Como si fuera tan fácil poner en el congelador las vivencias para volverlas a usarlas en el futuro! No, había que cerrar los ojos, sumergirse en el calor del recuerdo, por aproximadamente un par de horas y emprender el viaje de regreso. Esto particularmente no es fácil cuando se está en el trabajo.

Había que iniciar con un motivo, digo un motivo musical, pues el motivo, razón o circunstancia ya estaba dictada desde el más allá, o desde un poquito más acá, para no ir tan lejos. Decidí que la frase “Tu olor Habana” sería mi motivo, así que esperé a que ella misma me cantara su melodía. Todas las frases en determinado idioma tienen melodía, cadencia y ritmo propio. Esta no fue la excepción, la frase se cantó a ella misma y a mí, me encantó. Va mas o menos así: ♫ Tu olor Habana. (Estoy seguro que lo escuchan)

Con el motivo y el piano en los dedos, empecé a elaborar lo que serían las frases que acompañarían al pequeño motivo que hasta el momento duraba unos 2 segundos. No debería ser tan difícil, solo tengo que agregar unos 90 segundos de música antes y otros 90 después del motivo y tendré una canción de 182 segundos, 3:02 minutos. 3 minutos es la norma recomendada por la industria para hacer la canción “radio friendly” y aunque no era mi intención ser tan amigable con la radio, era un buen punto de partida.

Ya había pasado un buen tiempo trabajando en las frases que darían sentido y unidad a una idea más amplia, aglo asi como ♫ Tu olor Habana, ta ta ta. Ta ta ta ta, tata tata tatatata tata Tán ♫ estaba seguro que podría encontrar el resto de las palabras. Decidí seguir elaborando las otras secciones de la canción antes de preocuparme de esos tata tatas. Así es como me hice de una sección rítmica con aires de Cha Cha Cha o danzón para las estrofas. Después escribí una frase musical nueva, muy distinta a la original para que funcionara como introducción e intermedio.

Mi subconsciente rebelde quería arrojar un par de disonancias por aquí y por allá, pero mi consciente le decía que eso rompería con el aire tradicional de la canción. Después de varias horas de negociaciones, ellos acordaron poner las disonancias solo al inicio y al final. Mi subconsciente no estaba muy alegre, pero aceptó para no crear un problema mayor, con la contraparte que al fin y al cabo es el que trae el pan de cada día a la familia.

Después de varias horas de discusión interna pude terminar los 180 segundos restantes. Había que practicar todas las piezas juntas, hacer que el pegamento entre cada una de ellas no sea evidente y que las repeticiones estén en el lugar justo y no permitir que sos egos individuales secuestren el espíritu de la canción. Terminaba la canción, hice una grabación rustica para no olvidar su estado primigéneo. Ahora solo me resta escribir 180 segundos de letra para acompañar los 2 segundos de “Tu olor Habana”
